When to Hire a Recovery Professional vs. Relying on Free Peer Support

Should you hire a recovery professional or look for a free Sober Buddy? Both can be valuable, but they serve different needs. The right choice depends on the support you need today, the boundaries you expect and whether a clinician should be part of the plan.

What free peer support offers

A Sober Buddy shares lived experience and mutual encouragement. You might attend meetings together or check in by video. It's a free peer connection, not a paid service, clinical care or a promise of round-the-clock availability.

A peer may be a good fit when you're looking for community, conversation and someone who understands the ordinary ups and downs of recovery.

What a paid sober companion may offer

Professional addiction coaching or a paid sober companion can offer a defined schedule, structured accountability and an agreed support plan. This can be useful during transitions such as leaving treatment or dealing with a demanding change in routine. Services, qualifications and fees vary: verify each provider independently.

Ask what is included in video sessions, whether in-person support is offered, and how the provider handles missed calls, confidentiality and emergencies. Don't buy an unverified guarantee of sobriety.

When neither option is enough on its own

If you're facing dangerous withdrawal, suicidal thoughts or another immediate safety concern, get urgent medical or emergency help. For ongoing mental health or addiction treatment, work with qualified clinicians; peer support and paid companions can sit alongside that care.

SoberStyle.org has free peer-led Video Lounges and a member directory for exploring Sober Buddies and Professional Sober Companions. Use the lounge to connect with others, then decide whether free peer support or a separately arranged paid professional relationship fits your plan.
